Housing for the Session and the Highway Department

I left Nashville around 6:30 this morning headed to Little Rock. The primary purpose of the trip was to arrange a place for me to live during the upcoming session. I know it is less than a week before the session starts - I have just not had time to make any arrangements. I now have a place to stay, at least for the first month of the session.

There was a meeting at the Capitol with a firm that runs private prisons. The prison system is such a drain on our resources I wanted to listen to their presentation to see if there was a better more economical solution. I did not hear enough to convince me but it is probably worth further study. As I recall the State tried privatization once and it was not successful.

The Highway and Transportation Department hosted a "Freshman Legislator Briefing" this afternoon at their headquarters building. I wanted a chance to visit with them and make sure that they understood that any highway program had to have money in it for our rural highways. In addition, Representative Cole and I pushed funding for I-49 between Texarkana and Fort Smith - preferably starting on our end of the stretch. It was good to get reacquainted with the highway personnel and to meet the new commissioners. All in all it was a good productive day.
