Article from Hope Star 05/06/2008

This ran in the Hope Star yesterday. I really enjoyed speaking to the GED graduates. Everyone was so excited and so proud. It was a real feel good event.

‘Proved you can do it'

An excited crowd of graduates marched across the stage Monday evening at the UACCH Library Complex.These graduates were receiving their diplomas for their G.E.D. and were extremely proud.

“This is one of the liveliest bunch of graduates we have had in a long time,” Charles George, coordinator and instructor of the Hope Public Schools Garland Campus in Hope, said. “I'm glad to see them this happy.”Thirty-eight graduates were eligible to receive their diplomas, but not all 38 were able to attend the ceremony.“We have quite a few who have jobs or other obligations, but they know they have this certificate waiting for them and they know they have earned it,” George said.

The speaker of the evening was Larry Teague, a former state representative from Nashville. George introduced him as a leader who loved his country and known as a person of integrity.Teague took the stage and encouraged the graduates to further their education and to strive for a goal. He also congratulated them for their hard work and overcoming obstacles, and offered kind words for the supporters of the grads. He mentioned “moms, dads, spouses, aunts and uncles and anyone else who helped these graduates along the way.”“It was a tough road, but you made it,” he said. “Now, go on to a secondary education. You have proved that you can do it.”

He also encouraged the crowd to get involved, whether it be with their fellow man or just the simple act of voting.

Eight graduates received a W.A.G.E. certificate from a new instructor at Garland, Sammy Bray.Receiving diplomas were Hector Aguirre, Blake Beard, Ashley Beck, Leann Breeden, Marcia Burkhalter, Frankie Cantrell, II, Kayla Collins, James Crow, Jessica Dixon, James Fielding, William Franks, Kaitlin Ganous, Victoria Gleason, Melissia Hicks, Greta Hutchison, Andrea Jackson, Ron Jackson, Brandon Johnson, Miles Johnson, Samantha Jones, Rene Krause, Aaron Maxwell, Tanishsa McDaniel, Candy McRoy, Beatriz Mireles, Tammy Muldrow, Alex Narita, John Parks, Amelia Pote, Daniel Powell, Francisco Rodriguez, Julie Smillie, Lyndsie Smillie, Brandi Smith, Daniel Smith, Kimberly Spears, George Stanley, and Casey Wofford.
W.A.G.E. graduates included Taneeka Armstrong, Blake Beard, Chaunterell Bradley, Larry Burrow, Michael Chambless, Jeffery Dowdy, Fawntrese Phillips, and Tiffany Young.The graduation was followed by a reception, held in the UACCH Student Center. George said he was pleased the way the ceremony went and wished everyone good luck.
