I am a true son of Arkansas. I love the terrain, the rolling hills in southwest Arkansas, the Ouachitas and the Ozarks and the Delta - I love them all. I love our weather - where else can you have 3 days of terrible wintry weather in the middle of the week (Our friends across northern Arkansas are still dealing with the devastation caused by it.) and then have a sunny, warm day for Saturday (forecast for Nashville is sunny with a high of 67). With all of that said, the best thing about Arkansas is her people. There are a few current legislative issues that have stirred some emotion. I have heard from motorcyclists who want their right to choose to wear a helmet or not protected and the Governor's tobacco tax has stirred great emotion on both sides. By far the largest majority of the people who contact me are simply trying to communicate their position and if we talk we normally have a good conversation about the issue.
Some of the tobacco companies are calling their mailing lists and telling people about the Governor's tax and then rolling them to my phone number for them to voice their opinions. If I am available I take those calls because I enjoy visiting with them. I spoke with a man today who didn't know who I was, the tobacco company had asked him if he was for it and the next thing he knew he was connected to my office. We had a nice visit and I explained my position on the Governor's tobacco tax and I believe we parted friends. I am not a fan of the tobacco companies tactics but I do enjoy the conversations with my constituents.
