Bingen, Center Point and Delight Wild Game

It was a little busy last night. There were several events - all at the same time. I dropped by the Bingen Volunteer Fire Department early to visit with the workers and to let them know I could not be there. I did send money with my friend Tom Boozer who is an old Bingen School alumni. In conversation with Tom this morning he thought that the crowd was down a little but there was a lot going on.

The Center Point Volunteer Fire Department and Community Center was hosting a red beans and rice supper. They were taking donations but there was not an auction. The purpose was to give folks an opportunity to gather and visit with friends and to celebrate the "note burning" for the building. I believe that they told me that in 1999 they borrowed $91,000 to build the building and paid it off this year. That is a great effort on the community's behalf. I dropped by there and had a bowl of beans before heading out.

My last stop of the evening was the Riley Russell Wild Game supper at the Delight School Cafeteria. There was a big crowd - Mrs. Riley thought it might be the largest ever - gathered for eating a potluck meal of wild game (I know there was venison, duck and not sure about anything else). The food was really good, I ate some fried deer steak and some cooked in a crock pot with gravy that were extraordinarily good. Lots of door prizes were given and there were a couple of opportunities to purchase raffle items. They use the money to provide a couple of scholarships to young students and to help school age children that are in need.
There were lots of opportunities to get out and visit with our friends and neighbors last night and to support good causes. Even in these questionable economic times the generosity of the people in Southwest Arkansas is astounding.
