Mena Elementary Receives $100,000 Grant

State Farm spokesman for Arkansas, Gary Stephenson stated, "We congratulate Ms. Stroud, the Holly Harshman administration and students, and the community of Mena, on this winning proposal. Holly Harshman Elementary was the only school in Arkansas to receive a Youth Advisory Board grant. This is a tremendous compliment to the school."

"This opportunity to enrich the science experiences for our third through fifth grade students is an opportunity that will bring long-lasting benefits. Students have a natural curiosity that will be encouraged through the experiences that this grant will enable. They will also be involved with older students who will serve as role-models. I am proud of the school and its leadership for taking the initiative to explore this idea," commended Dr. Diann Gathright, Superintendent.

The program will involve hands-on science education, sometimes in an outdoor lab setting, for elementary students. The design of the program is to use various science education tools and hands-on experiences to pique student enthusiasm for the sciences, thus inspiring more of them to higher education in the field. Stroud's proposal won in the category of "Access to Higher Education". The proposal noted the trend of diminishing numbers of students seeking higher education in the sciences in recent years.

Way to go Mena. Congratulations to all involved and thanks State Farm.
